Crisis Assistance Ministry Partnership

PUMC is renewing our financial partnership in 2023 with Crisis Assistance Ministry (CAM) to provide direct aid to persons experiencing a financial crisis with utilities or rent.  The pastoral staff has experienced a sharp increase in requests for assistance and is having to turn some away.  By financially partnering with CAM, we can better help those in our community in need.

NexTrex Recycling Challenge

NexTrex Recycling Challenge

You are invited to participate in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge! This church-wide green project, a part of our Home•Table•Planet initiative (details HERE), begins on Sunday, November 3. We will collect thousands of plastic bags and plastic film that would otherwise go into landfills and waterways, and instead turn them into sustainable outdoor materials. The goal is to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic bags and plastic film in 12 months (about 81,500 plastic bags worth), Trex will then donate a high-performance composite bench to our church! It’s a win for us, our environment and for NexTrex.

NexTrex accepts produce bags, bread bags, case overwrap (think toilet paper and paper towel rolls), dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, wood pellet bags, Ziplock & other re-sealable bags, bubble wrap, salt bags, and cereal bags. All materials must be clean, dry, and free of food residue. For more details, watch the short video clip at the bottom of this page.

Start collecting plastic bags now. Once you have collected a few trash bags filled with plastic bags, drop them off here at PUMC in our bins located inside the church during regular business hours. 1,000 pounds is a LOT of plastic, so we encourage everyone (and friends & family!) to participate. The Green Team volunteers will weigh and report the collected materials every month before delivering them to one of the participating drop-off retailer locations.

For more information or to volunteer to help, please contact Anje Seufert or Fran Webber

Together we can do it!

RESPONDING TO HURRICANE HELENE

Ongoing updates from the Disaster Relief Team - Last updated November 26, 2024

Melanie Trotter has graciously accepted the role to coordinate our ongoing response. Feel free to contact her directly (DisasterMinistry@providenceumc.org) to get more involved!

It is no surprise that the PUMC family's response to our neighbors in Western North Carolina has been absolutely incredible. Each time our contributions are delivered to the dropout location, we are met by amazement. When we arrive, the response is always "Wow. Here comes Providence." It is humbling to be a part of such a generous, selfless, loving church.

DONATIONS

We have not received a new request for donations this week. We will share more information as it becomes available.

STAY INFORMED

Please contact us HERE to get more involved! For ongoing updates and needs, please check our Tuesday email or this webpage.

Habitat for Humanity - Let's Build a House!

  • Google Calendar ICS

Every family deserves a safe & decent home. By collaborating with Habitat for Humanity, we can provide a stable residence for a family in need. 100% of the 2024 Christmas Eve Offering will go to support the Habitat House building project, which breaks ground early 2025!

Who are we Supporting?

Felicia moved to Charlotte from New Jersey in 1994 and has lived in her current residence since 2016. Her daughter Zantasia studies at UNC Charlotte and wants to become a lawyer. They currently live in a rental duplex in the Windsor Park neighborhood that was built in 1960. While her neighborhood is relatively safe, it lacks diversity and her home has structural issues, including foundation shifting, resulting in numerous cracks compromising heating and cooling. The window A/C units are used for cooling, but they have limited capacity and often spread the smell of mildew/mold… click HERE to read more.

Ways to Support

  • VOLUNTEER ON BUILD DATES: We will break ground in early 2025 (a schedule and signup link will be available on this page soon)!

  • PRAY: Let's come together in prayer for the Habitat for Humanity home build project, the Knowles family, and our church members who are serving. May God bless the family with strength and hope, and guide the hands of all the church volunteers working to create a safe and loving home.

  • FINANCIAL SUPPORT: If you want to provide financial support to this project, please click HERE to navigate to our online giving portal and be sure to select "Christmas Eve Offering" in the "Select a Fund" dropdown.

  • More ways to help coming soon!

Please contact Kevin Rose HERE.

Room In The Inn - Season Begins December 4

Each winter, PUMC opens it’s doors, providing overflow shelter to those without a home of their own. 14 Neighbors from Roof Above, a Charlotte organization committed to ending homelessness, spend Wednesday nights in our downstairs Mission Center. We, the PUMC congregation, serve and share the love of God by providing compassion, meals, hospitality, transportation, showers, prayers, laundry access, cots, a listening ear. Won’t you come be a part of this ministry?

We have 17 Wednesdays nights/Thursday mornings of service opportunities. If each person signed up, we would have this filled faster than a Taylor Swift concert. That would be amazing!

There is something for everyone: drivers, cooks, organizers, hosts, behind-the-scenes help, and those that love being with people. Go to the sign-up genius, and find a role that suits you. Want more information? Contact Karen Perry HERE.

Serve: HERE

In addition to your presence, the Room In The Inn ministry is collecting the following items. The collection bins are outside Brandon Dirks office.

  • Female underwear, XL - XXL

  • Male underwear boxer shorts, not briefs, XL - XXXL

  • Bathrobes, XL - XXXL

Rise Against Hunger Event

On Sunday, October 27, we will again support Rise Against Hunger. Just as our congregation is doing now to support those in Western North Carolina who were decimated by the hurricane, RAH is an organization that addresses those in immediate need of food and responds to global natural and man-made crises, including droughts, floods, conflict zones, and transitioning political situations) by hosting our 20th meal packaging event! It will be held in the Mission Center and will start at noon, right after our worship services. Not only is this event great for individuals, it is also great for the entire family, as anyone over the age of 5 can participate.

This time, rather than packing our normal 10,000 meals, we're packing 20,000, which means we'll need at least 80 volunteers. So, please sign up to help make it happen. During our 19 previous events, PUMC has packaged over 357,000 meals. Our goal is to pack 500,000 meals by the end of 2027 and these 20,000 will help us get there! To volunteer, please Click HERE. If you are unable to volunteer, but wish to help cover the cost of the meals ($0.42 per meal), please click HERE.

We join with the United Methodist Church Council of Bishops who condemn the violence in the Middle East and call for prayer to protect the innocent, to hope for a merciful end to this Israel/Gaza conflict and to see lasting peace in the Holy Land. Consider making a donation to Providence UMC and earmark it for UMCOR. When disasters occur, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) provides assistance that alleviates suffering and serves as a source of help and hope for the vulnerable. Experiments are welcome!  Maybe you have an idea to help some students at your school, a project to help in your neighborhood, or at your place of work.  Do you have an idea on how to expand a current program?  Would you like to raise some money to buy materials to paint a local non-profit you are involved in?  For more information, contact Rev.
