May Mission of the Month: Freedom School

Freedom School is an ongoing mission partner at PUMC. The free summer program helps at-risk Mecklenburg county K-8 students narrow the achievement gap that often occurs during the summer break by providing a safe, healthy environment for learning. They plan to serve over 1,000 scholars this summer in 14 locations around Charlotte. For the first time since 2019, Freedom School returns with its on-site program for all students with in-person volunteers! PUMC supports the Oakhurst STEAM Academy Freedom School site on Monroe Road.

PUMC provides the Freedom School with volunteers and donations. In past years, many of you enjoyed being a reading buddy, a chaperone, or serving as the morning Harambee reader. These volunteer opportunities are open again, plus many more.

2022 Program Details:

• June 20 – July 28 (PUMC focus weeks are July 11 – July 28)

• Full-day, 5 days a week literacy and enrichment program

• Free transportation

• Breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily

The program depends on donations, and we are collecting the following items throughout the month of May:

• New or gently used books for ages K-8th grade

• Individually wrapped nutritional snacks (granola bars, air-popped popcorn, fruit or applesauce pouches, yogurt-covered pretzels or raisins, 100% fruit leathers, trail mix without candy, crackers such as Goldfish or graham, whole grain pretzels)

A blue donation bin has been conveniently located outside by door closest to the Welcome Desk.
