Youth who will be in grades 8-12 for the school year 2018-2019, or those will be a rising tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade student who has never attended acolyte training, are invited to attend the summer 2018 training session for acolytes.
Young people who have attained Confirmation and completed training will serve as acolytes for the 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM Traditional Sunday worship services, as well as additional special services throughout the year. Acolytes carry into worship the light, processional cross, or Bible and assist the pastors with communion, baptism and other duties.
July 23 – 25 or August 6-8
Monday – Wednesday from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Background of UMC Acolytes:
“Jesus said: ‘I am the light of the world’” (John 8:12). The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus coming into the presence of the worshiping community.
Many congregations use two candles on the altar to point out that Jesus was both a human being and God. At the end of the service, the light is carried out into the world to show that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. … This symbolizes the light of Jesus Christ going out into the world where believers are to serve.” (Worship Matters, Vol II, “The Work of Acolytes”)
